Here is a look at the medal count after Day 3 of the Games heading into the fourth day:
An SB Nation article from Feb. 7, indicates Opening Ceremony live stream coverage is only available in countries outside of the United States. BBC and CBC will provide coverage for international viewers in those regions. Basically, Canadian and European viewers will get the live version of the Opening Ceremony either on television or live stream, while U.S. viewers will have to wait over eight hours for televised pre-recorded coverage. Live streaming feeds are restricted to the United States by broadcasters, but a majority of other events will be available live online for the rest of the Winter Olympics. The Deadspin site offers a report on ways to view the live video for US viewers, with some caveats and disclaimers offered.
So United States viewers will be able to enjoy the Opening Ceremony beginning at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on NBC and local affiliates such as WSLS 10 in Roanoke. The version shown will be a “highlights version” likely edited for television, with NBC’s Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira providing the commentary.
Of course the other options to keep updated with the latest as the live event happens are by following select social media accounts as they provide photos, tweets or other status updates from Sochi. Some may simply want to wait to see the event on television though, but for those who want to stay updated online, check out The Guardian as they will be giving regular live coverage updates on their website.
The 2014 Winter Olympics will extend from Thursday, Feb. 6 through the closing ceremony on Feb. 23. A variety of channels including NBC, USA, NBC Sports Network and MSNBC will offer televised coverage in addition to NBCOlympics website live streaming coverage of events. See more info at the NBC Olympics site here for scheduled events.
Eliza Outtrim of the USA could be the one to watch, as she stepped up well in the absence of Heidi Kloser. The 28-year-old earned a fourth-place finish.
There’s no medal on the line in this one, but you can’t look past the sheer amount of star power that will be on the ice.
Ashley Wagner is a two-time United States champion who won silver at the 2012 Grand Prix Final and bronze at the 2013 Grand Prix Final, and she’s probably the fourth-best skater on show Saturday.
Nancy Armour of USA Today thinks that Wagner is the United States’ last hope when it comes to winning a medal in team figure skating after the men’s earlier struggles:
With Jeremy Abbott melting down in epic proportions and Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir struggling, the Americans need a strong showing from Wagner on Saturday to revive their hopes for a medal in the inaugural Olympic team competition.
It will be tough for the 22-year-old, as she’ll be facing off with Italy’s Carolina Kostner, Japan’s Mao Asada and Russia’s Julia Lipnitskaya, all of whom are the best in the world.

Although there has already been a day of events in Sochi, the 2014 Winter Olympics really kick into high gear on Saturday. With the opening ceremony now out of the way, it’s going to be wall-to-wall action.
Because NBC loves to tape-delay many events, it can be difficult to keep track of what’s on and when. You can count on the high-profile events to come later in the night if you’re watching in the United States, but with NBC using its family of networks, you can still get your fill of Olympic action across multiple channels.
Here’s the television schedule for Saturday’s action.
With so much on, it’s smart to figure out which events should get high priority. No human being can watch every single second of the Olympics. Like any top athlete, you need to pace yourself and not attack it with too much, too early.
With that in mind, here are the top three events on Saturday.

The U.S. hasn’t experienced much success on the ice in speedskating in recent history, but one woman could change all of that when she begins her races on Day 4.
Heather Richardson has won a gold and two bronze medals on the world stage in women’s speedskating. With the 500-meter final taking place on Tuesday, Richardson could add an Olympic medal to her collection.
After making her first appearance in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Richardson is looking to be much more competitive in Sochi, according to John Powers of The Boston Globe:
In Vancouver I was just happy to be there. Here, I actually want to put in some solid races, just go out, relax, and do my best, hopefully be on the podium. My goal is to be on the podium in at least one of my three individual events.
While her best events are in the sprint and 1,000-meter events, Richardson could surprise a few of the top contenders with a 500-meter win or podium appearance.
The High Point, N.C. native is one of Team USA’s best hopes at winning an Olympic medal on the ice along with both Shani Davis and J.R. Celski, who didn’t medal in their first events.
Canadian Kaya Turski is the clear-cut favorite to win the competition, but Devin Logan is looking to pull off another upset for the Americans in the slopestyle event.
Only this time, Team USA will have to win on skis rather than snowboard.
As for a source of inspiration, Logan seems to have found one in Sage Kotsenburg after seeing him win gold in the men’s snowboard slopestyle:
But with stiff competition in Turski, Logan might not be able to stand at the top of the podium like Kotsenburg or Jamie Anderson of Team USA.
With four out of the last five gold medals in X-Games Slopestyle, Turski is a dominant force in the sport and will be looking to continue her rule in the first slopestyle event on the Olympic stage.
Shaun White is the name everyone will be looking for when the men’s halfpipe competition begins.
After dropping out of the men’s slopestyle event, White received grief from fellow competitors and put all of his eggs into one basket. Luckily, that basket just so happens to be where White has been most successful in his Olympic career.
With two gold medals already in the halfpipe competition in 2006 and 2010, White simply set his sights on the event due to how crucial it is to him, according to David Filipov of The Boston Globe
But White isn’t the only rider dropping in on Day 4. Ayumu Hirano of Japan is not only a true competitor for White, but he finished just behind the American in 2013 at the X-Games after nailing consecutive double-cork 1080s.
Scotty Lago was also a bronze medalist back in 2010 and, at just 26 years old, could repeat the same success on the Sochi stage.
With several possibilities in the final, the men’s halfpipe is sure to be just as exciting as the slopestyle competition ever dreamed to be

You can’t talk about men’s snowboard slopestyle without discussing Shaun White’s decision to step out and focus on halfpipe. Canadians Max Parrot and Sebastien Toutant took to Twitter to call out the American star, per Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel.
It added a bit more intrigue to what looked like one of the most entertaining events already.
Both Toutant and Parrot have qualified for the final, with the latter posting an absurd 97.5 on Thursday. Parrot was nearly flawless during his second run and will be the man to beat on Saturday. He made sure to dig the knife into White that much more, as well, per TSN:
I just think me and ‘Seb’ said something all the other riders would have loved to tell, but maybe are scared to tell,” Parrot told TSN on Thursday. “He choked a couple contests this year with not really good reasons. With him here he has the potential to be…Why choke on it for nothing?
The battle for gold will likely include Finland’s Roope Tonteri, Sweden’s Sven Thorgren and Norway’s Staale Sandbech. All four had great qualifying runs, while Sandbech took home bronze in snowboard slopestyle at in Aspen at the Winter X Games.
Since it’s so early in the Olympics, there aren’t a ton of chances to see medals won and lost on Saturday. One such competition, though, is women’s moguls. The competition will wrap up with the second qualifying run and the finals to come on the first day of action.
The Winter Olympics 2014 opening ceremony takes place in Sochi’s Fisht Olympic Stadium. This event won’t be seen in real time via personal devices although the competitions can be enjoyed by live stream online on NBC.

With that in mind, for non-Americans or Americans in the United Kingdom, the UK live feed is available according to the BBC on Feb. 6. However, the ability to watch as the festivities unfold requires a TV license, which is available online only to those who will be watching in the UK.
Another alternative for live streaming, which will happen beginning at 7:00 p.m. MSK (Sochi time), comes from VyprVPN. Again, there is a cost involved with a trial period offered for free.
If you can’t purchase or don’t want to obtain a UK TV license which may or may not be legitimate and/or you don’t want to join VyprVPN, you can watch the entire four-hour extravaganza on NBC after the fact when the Peacock Network airs the Olympics 2014 ceremony starting at 7:30 p.m. ET, 10:30 p.m. PT, on Feb. 7, 2014.
Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer will preside as hosts.
As for who is taking part in this ceremonial start to the Olympics, Russia’s President Vladamir Putin is said to be the master of ceremonies.
In addition, the story of Russia will allegedly be played out on the stage in Sochi. Some 1,000 performers are reportedly taking part through music, dancing, circus arts and multi-genre cultural projects. The exact manner for how all of this pageantry will be presented is being kept under wraps as all who are taking part continue rehearsing at Fisht Olympic Stadium as of this writing.
That said, the athletes participating in the games will be on parade. Collectively, these Olympians will represent 88 countries which is a record number for any Winter Olympics in the past. Each team will proudly wear their national uniforms with the U.S. donning their Ralph Lauren-designed red, white, and blue garb.
Total viewership for the Winter Olympics 2014 opening ceremony in Sochi is expected to better the viewership that was enjoyed for the 2009 Vancouver Winter Olympics when 190 million viewers took part. Stay tuned.
Reigning gold medalist Hannah Kearney of the USA is sitting pretty so far. She had the highest score in the first round of qualifying, posting a 23.05.
Two of Canada’s Dufour-Lapointe sisters managed to crack the top three, with Chole taking second and Justine taking third.
The 2014 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony live stream and televised coverage is taking place on Friday, Feb. 7, thanks to modern technology. However, there is a catch as United States viewers won’t be able to see the event live as it takes place live in Sochi, Russia. Some websites have pointed out additional options to check out the opening to the games, although there will be televised and live stream Olympics coverage available for other events.
